Lord of the Rings Movie Marathon (Sat. 1 Dec, 2012 10:00 am - 10:00 pm)

Lord of the Rings extended version marathon!  December 1st, Saturday Workman 101.  Free Admission. Fellowship of the Rings will begin at 10 a.m. Two Towers begins at 1:50 p.m. Return of the King will start at 6 p.m. Come and watch the Lord of the Rings with your friends. Bring homework or study material while watching the movie. Snacks will be sold throughout the showing. Hosted by the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Fine Arts Festival (Sat. 1 Dec, 2012 11:00 am - 4:00 pm)

The New Mexico Tech Community Education invites the public to attend a Fine Arts Show, Sale and speciality Workshop. The show and sale will highlight student work from the fall 2012 semester. Each workshop is just $10 per one-hour class.  Workshop attendees will complete a take-home project in each class, such as paint-your-own ceramics, ornament making, jewelry making, and other special handmade gifts. We will also have entertainment, music, and food, so plan to have lunch with us and join the fun. Starts at 11 a.m. at the Fine Arts Center on Canyon Road, across from the Golf Shop.

First Saturday Star Party (Sat. 1 Dec, 2012 6:00 pm)

The Astronomy Club will have a star party after the VLA tours. The event is free and open to the public, so come out and join us at the Etscorn Observatory. The club hosts star parties on the first Saturday of each month starting at dusk.

NRAO Colloquium (Fri. 7 Dec, 2012 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

The NRAO Special Colloquium will feature guest speaker Karl Gordon of Space Telescope Science Institute this week. Gordon will speak on "Extragalactic Dust Mass Determinations in the Optical and Infrared: Evidence for Dust Emissivity Variations” at 2 p.m. Friday, December 7, at the NRAO Auditorium in Socorro. Gordon will discuss an investigation using the HERITAGE Herschel Key Project far-IR/submillimeter observations of the Magellanic Clouds that indicate there are wavelength dependent variations in the dust emissivity law with environment. All NRAO employees are invited to attend via video.

La Pastorela (Sun. 9 Dec, 2012 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

La Pastorela, the traditional Christmas play by La Gran Pastorela de Belen group, will be at 6 p.m. December 9, at the Garcia Opera House. The public is invited and there is no admission charge. Midnight Breakfast (Sun. 9 Dec, 2012 11:00 pm - 11:59 pm)

Start finals week with late night breakfast, courtesy of New Mexico Tech. From 11 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday, breakfast will be served in the dining hall for all Tech students who need a break from studying or who just want to carb load for the week. This event is FREE for all Tech Students and is sponsored by the SAB (Student Activities Board).

Five students will be giving massages both days. Third floor of Fidel Center. FREE to all Tech Students. Take advantage and get some relief!

Legislative Open Forum (Thu. 13 Dec, 2012 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm)

State Rep. Don Tripp of Socorro and state Sen. Howie Morales of Silver City will be at New Mexico Tech to visit the facilities and meet with administrators on Thursday, Dec. 13. This has become a sort of annual tradition as a preparation for the upcoming legislative session. This visit is an opportunity for our legislators to listen to their constituents about various issues. President Dr. Daniel H. López will greet the legislators and escort them to the new engineering lab in Cramer 114. They will also visit the Bureau of Geology before hosting an open forum at about 2:30 p.m. in the Fidel Center ballroom A. All are invited to the open forum and welcome to bring forward any ideas or concerns, particularly those that may relate to the upcoming 2013 legislative session.

Physics Dissertation Defense (Thu. 13 Dec, 2012 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm)

Sonja Behnke, doctoral candidate in the Physics Department, will defend her thesis, titled "Studies of Volcanic Lightning Using the Lightning Mapping Array." Behnke's dissertation presents results from VHF lightning mapping studies of volcanic lightning that occurred during the eruptions of Redoubt Volcano (Alaksa, 2009) and Eyjafjallajökull (Iceland, 2010). 2 p.m. in Speare 113.
