Chess Club Guest Speaker

The Tech Chess Club is pleased to announce a special guest lecture in MSEC 101 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21. The speaker will be Issah Abdallah, and he will be giving a lecture about his research for which he won third place at the Society of Petroleum Engineers International student paper contest. Pizza and pie will be provided. Email Caleb Jaquish at with questions. Issah is a business owner and a graduate student in Petroleum Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He is a graduate research assistant at the Petroleum Recovery Research Center. He does research into "Cost Effective Treatment of Produced Water Using Co-produced Energy Sources." His accomplishments include coming in third place at the SPE International student paper contest in Amsterdam last November after winning the East Coast, Rocky Mountains and Mid-continent North America regional paper contest at the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma last April.

Student Activities Board meeting

The Student Activities Board will meet every other week on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. in Weir 102. In these meetings we will plan monthly events, Spring Fling, 49ers, Welcome Week, and other events. Students are welcome to join the meetings.

Computer Science Seminar

The Computer Science and Engineering Department is hosting a career talk. Dr. Rod Sanchez will present, "Preparing Students for a Career in Software Development and Digital Media Preparing Students for Their Economic Future Now." Learning software development and digital media production techniques using a structured curriculum can lead to rewarding and lucrative careers for students. Digital media is one of the fastest growing job sectors in the world today; several leading technology companies are seeing a shortage of technically skilled digital media professionals in the U.S. 2 p.m. in Cramer 124.

Astrobiology Research Seminar

The Graduate Student Association is hosting the second New Mexico Tech Interdisciplinary Research Seminar on Astrobiology all day in the Fidel Center third-floor ballrooms. All are welcome to attend. Dr. Chris McKay of NASA Ames will present the keynote address to close the event. His talk is "The Search for Life on Other Plantets" and will include an update from the Mars Curiosity Rover.

Physics Department Seminar

Dr. Patrick Gaulme, astronomer with the Apache Point Observatory and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, is the guest speaker for the Physics Department seminar. He will present, "Seismology of Giant Planets." Seismology applied to giant planets could drastically change our understanding of their deep interiors, as it has happened with the Earth, the Sun, and many main-sequence and evolved stars. The study of giant planets' composition is important for understanding both the mechanisms enabling their formation and the origins of planetary systems, in particular our own. 4 p.m. in Workman 101.

Dr. Dave Weinberg will present two seminars with the Earth and Environmental Science Department. Weinberg is founder of Practical Risk LLC, based in Albuquerque, and is a Visiting Geoscientist with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. At 2 p.m., he will present "Geoscience and the Hydrofracking Debate." At 4 p.m., he will present "Bent and Broken: Confessions of a Structural Geologist." Both talks are in MSEC 101.
