Physics Seminar

Date: Thu. 6 Feb, 2014 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Workman Center

Christian Veillet, the Director of the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory, will present the weekly seminar. His talk is titled, "The Large Binocular Telescope Observatory: Morphing a High-Tech Prototype into a Production Machine." The LBT has two 8.4-meter mirrors on a single mount and is the largest optical telescope in the world, as powerful as an 11.8m telescope in collecting area. In the midst of financial ups and downs and political challenges, the pioneering vision of a few engineers and scientists and the optimism of its promoters morphed a technological dream into a one-of-a-kind highly-complex facility now sitting on Mt Graham in East Arizona in an international collaboration of German, Italian, and US research institutions and universities. More than 25 years after it first design and in spite of its extraordinary capabilities, the observatory has still some way to go to join the leading pack of modern large telescopes. Veillet will describe the status of LBT, its unique capabilities, and some of its scientific achievements. 4 p.m. in Workman 101
