SOCORRO, N.M., April 29, 2002 -- Bonnie J. Wayne, a graduate student pursuing a master of science degree in biology at New Mexico Tech, recently was named a Macey Scholar at the state-supported research university. The honor includes a $5,000 scholarship. (For stories on the other two 2001 recipients of the Macey Scholarship, please see .)

Wayne, the daughter of Robert and Cheryl Wayne of Albuquerque, is a graduate of Del Norte High School. She is currently pursuing a master of science degree in biology at New Mexico Tech, after having earned two bachelor of science degrees at Tech last year, one in mathematics and one in psychology.

In the recent past, Wayne has volunteered her time to work for the New Mexico Science Olympiad, developed a website for the New Mexico Tech psychology department, performed in plays and musicals at Tech, served as a student orientation leader, and written several articles in Paydirt, the campus newspaper.

In addition to her coursework, Wayne has been actively involved in researching the effects of retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, on the brainstem nuclei of developing laboratory rats.

"New Mexico Tech has been a great experience for me," Wayne says. "I was able to receive two bachelor of science degrees in five years, and I should receive my master's in two years.

"It's a lot of schooling," she adds, "but soon I'll be paid to do something I love to do. . . . That's all that really matters to me."

As an undergraduate, Wayne also attended New Mexico Tech on a Tech President's Scholarship and a Lottery Success Scholarship.

Tech students chosen to participate in the William and Jean Macey Scholars Program are selected on the basis of their demonstrated academic accomplishments, both in the classroom and research laboratory, as well as their active participation in institutional service and co-curricular activities.

The Macey Scholars Program is funded by an endowment established by William B. and Jean M. Macey of Albuquerque.
William Macey graduated from the New Mexico School of Mines (as New Mexico Tech was known in its early years) in 1942, and also was awarded an honorary doctorate by Tech in 1984.
