Dr. McShannon comes to New Mexico Tech after having worked for more than 25 years at New Mexico State University, spending the last five years as a proposal development specialist with the NMSU’s Office of Research Development. There she assisted faculty to develop competitive proposals to federal agencies. McShannon’s experience includes support to faculty members pursuing large multi-disciplinary or multi-institutional efforts, and individual faculty proposals.

“We now have a position that more tightly focuses on the needs of our faculty,” said Dr. Van Romero, Vice President of Research and Economic Development. “This position has been designed to address the interests and requests of the faculty and provide them a new level of support.”

“NMT is fortunate to have a research development professional of the caliber of Dr. McShannon on board,” said Carlos Romero, Associate Vice President of Research and Economic Development. “Dr. McShannon has a proven ability to develop research capacity for faculty. Through her experience in education, program development and research development, she has demonstrated throughout her career the rare degree of flexibility and attention to detail needed to assist faculty to be successful in pursuing extramural funding.”

In accordance with New Mexico Tech’s five-year Strategic Plan, Romero set as a major goal for R&ED to grow a healthy research enterprise.

“In order to develop our research capabilities and grow the research capacity of our faculty, we knew we needed to expand our services and tools to meet their needs,” he said. “Earlier this summer, we unveiled a new funding opportunity database PIVOT. At the same time, we upgraded a vacant position to this new Research Development Manager position.”

McShannon earned her bachelor’s in education from Chadron State in Nebraska in 1982. She earned her master’s in curriculum and instruction from NMSU in 1992 and her Ph.D. in Educational Management and Development, also from NMSU, in 1998. She joined the NMSU staff in 1990 as a program administrator, later being promoted to proposal development specialist in the Vice President of Research Office in 1999.
