‘Rhythm of the Dance’ Brings Irish History To Life

SOCORRO, N.M. – The New Mexico Tech Performing Arts Series presents the world-renowned “Rhythm of the Dance” show performed by the National Dance Company of Ireland on stage at Macey Center at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13.

The National Dance Co. of Ireland will perform "Rhythm of the Dance" at Macey Center on Monday, Feb. 13.

In tandem with this show, Tech Club Macey will be hosting an "Irish Romance Valentine's Dinner." Dinner is ticketed separately at $25 for members and $30 for non-members, with Irish pot roast, roasted potatoes and root veggies, Caesar salad and Bailey’s Irish creme cake.

“Rhythm of the Dance” will bring you on an epic journey through the ages, from ancient mythology to the travels of the Irish emigrants, from the rolling hills and stonewalls of Connemara all the way to the modern skyscrapers of New York, with some surprises along the way.

This two-hour dance and music extravaganza contains a wealth of Irish talent in an inspiring saga the relives the journey of the Irish Celts throughout history. Using modern and traditional art forms of dance and music, this richly-costumed show marries the contemporary and the ancient, enhancing this 1,000-year-old story with the most up-to-date stage technology. “Rhythm of the Dance” has heralded a new era in Irish entertainment, internationally rated as one of the most popular and busiest Irish step dance shows in the world.

Rhythm of the Dance preserves the traditions of Irish step dancing while presenting it in the most modern format that has made it a leader in the field. The show features a live band, three tenors and more than 20 dancers.

“Rhythm of the Dance” started in 1998 as a three-week tour of the United States. Overwhelmingly positive reviews prompted the show to tour internationally and achieve critical acclaim year after year. The show has sold out venues around the globe, including China in 2000, Poland in 2001, Paris in 2003, India in 2004, Greece in 2004, and Russia in 2005, playing to over seven million fans.

The National Dance Company of Ireland has performed “Rhythm of the Dance” at Dollywood, Tennessee, several times, including a memorable performance with Dolly Parton singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” in 2007.  Four and a half million fans (and counting) have experienced Rhythm of the Dance!

The troupe recorded a full-length special for PBS that aired in 2011, including stage footage from Amsterdam and on-location filming from various sites in Ireland. “Rhythm of the Dance” was selected to perform at the closing ceremonies of the inaugural European Summer Games in Azerbaijan in 2015.
