Fall Career Fair Offers Opportunities For All NMT Students
Career Services Offering Preparatory Workshops

SOCORRO, N.M. – The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Fall 2016 Career Fair is an excellent opportunity for Tech students to explore possible career, internship and graduate school opportunities.

Tristine Hayward, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, anticipates roughly 50 companies, universities, and government agencies will be attending. The semi-annual fair will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Fidel Center.

"Employers know they can find the best and brightest students at New Mexico Tech," Hayward said. "Recruiters also are aware of the rankings and accolades that Tech earns, such as the recent rankings released in USA Today."

Hayward said this year's presenters have jobs, co-ops, fellowships and internships available for students in every academic department on campus. The complete list of exhibitors is available at www.nmt.edu/career-fair.

The job market nationally – and globally – is booming, with more jobs opening each quarter. Hayward pointed out that 22 Fortune 500 companies have visited Tech to recruit new hires over the past year.

In addition to the exhibitors, a number of other companies will be on campus to conduct job interviews with students. Those companies are Mewbourne Petroleum, Google, Chevron, Pantex and The Aerospace Corp. For the complete list of information sessions, go to http://www.nmt.edu/information-sessions-a-interviews.

Students can prepare themselves for the Career Fair in several ways. First, students should research the companies in attendance and what their specialties are. Hayward encourages students to bring résumés and dress professionally to the fair.

The Career Closet, located in the Student Services offices, is available for students who need professional clothing for the fair. The lending closet has men and women's professional suites, ties and shoes. Check out is free but come early for best selection.

The Student Affairs Office is also hosting four workshops to help students prepare for the fair. Résumé and cover letter writing workshops will be Monday, Sept. 12, in the Career Services office (Fidel 262).

A "Preparing For the Fair" workshop is at noon and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, in Fidel 262. This workshop is especially important for first-timers. Topics include proper dress, introductions, what to expect and free personal business cards for those who attend. Students will also hear tips for doing pre-fair research on the presenters.

Interviewing skills workshops will be at noon and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in Fidel 262. This workshop is important for anyone who is seriously considering an internship or employment. It will be repeated at 5 p.m. that day.

Flash résumé review sessions are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 and 16, in the Fidel Center atrium. Students are encouraged to stop by for an impromptu look at their resumes.

"This is very helpful to students who are busy and don't have much time to sit and chat about their resumes," Hayward said. "We give it a look over and the students can make the necessary changes without much fuss."

There will be free food at the workshops, but students should RSVP to careerservices@admin.nmt.edu so that sufficient food can be ordered.

"We are here to help students make the transition from student to a career," Hayward said. "These workshops and the career fairs are important events to help students. I encourage Techies to take advantage of the services we offer because they do work."
