Professor Appointed To State Licensure Board


Dr. Nadir Yilmaz Is The Board’s Educational Representative


Governor Susana Martinez recently appointed Dr. Nadir Yilmaz to serve on the New Mexico State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors.


Yilmaz is a full professor and the associate department chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Yilmaz is the board representative from education.

“This is important to me because I’ve been in New Mexico for a long time and served to a lot of professional societies,” he said.Now I am able to serve the people of New Mexico and that’s very important to me. I am representing not only higher education in New Mexico but also New Mexico Tech. This is another good way to show what we stand for.”

The Board meets quarterly to set standards for licensure and review both new and out-of-state applicants.

Dr. Yilmaz was also recently named a Fellow of the National Society of Professional Engineers (F.NSPE) – the first in New Mexico in more than a decade. Additionally, in June, Dr. Yilmaz was named the New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers (NMSPE) State Engineer of the Year 2016 for his outstanding service to professional engineers, the community and the engineering profession.

Dr. Yilmaz has conceived, developed, and assembled a research laboratory for engines and fuels, as well as two educational laboratories that were supported by the State of New Mexico and the Department of Education (STEM Grant). He has advised numerous minority students under the AMP (Alliance for Minority Participation) program for undergraduate research and has successfully taught, supervised, and trained many young engineers, which include many women and underrepresented minorities.

He has been involved with numerous externally funded projects including those with the Department of Homeland Security, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, Sandia National Laboratories, and NASA. He has brought many research grants and has established collaborations with overseas universities, companies, and small businesses in New Mexico and across the United States.

Dr. Yilmaz is an active member of SAE International, ASME, ASEE, and NSPE. Within NSPE, he is the Southwest Regional Vice Chair of the Higher Education Interest Group, a member of NSPE Membership Board, and ex-officio member of NSPE Young Engineers Resource Group.

He serves as the editor-in-chief for the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants, is a committee member on the SAE ABET Board, and is the Vice Chair of SAE Education Board, which oversees all the educational activities of SAE International serving more than 130,000 members globally. In addition, Dr. Yilmaz is Chair of ASME-New Mexico Section and President-Elect for New Mexico State Society of Professional Engineers (NMSPE), and was the Past President of NMSPE-Albuquerque Chapter. Internationally, Dr. Yilmaz was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of Turkish Society of Automotive Engineers. He received the 2016 SAE International Excellence in Engineering Education Triple “E” Award and is the 2014 NSPE National Young Engineer of the Year, an award not bestowed upon a New Mexico engineer since 1979.

Dr. Yilmaz received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from Istanbul Technical University (1999), Bradley University (2001), and New Mexico State University (2005), respectively.
