SOCORRO, N.M. March 15, 2016 – The campus community and local residents are invited to the official ground-breaking for the new Chemistry Department building at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 21, at the construction site south of Workman Center.

The new Chemistry Department building (in orange) will sit just south of Workman Center.

University President Dr. Daniel H. Lopez will host the short event, along with other administrators, Chemistry Department professors, university regents and local leaders. The event will culminate with officials breaking ground with ceremonial golden shovels. Architectural renderings of the new building will be on display as well.

The new 40,000 square-foot building is funded by General Obligation Bond passed by New Mexico voters in 2014. That bond included $15 million for this construction project. The Chemistry Department will relocate from Jones Hall, which will be completely renovated.

Initial ground-work has already begun on the new building. The general contractor, Bradbury Stamm, also oversaw construction of the new Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources building, which was completed in 2015.

The project will also necessitate the reconfiguration of the parking lot that serves Fidel Center, Workman Center and the new building. Once the project is completed in early 2017, the parking lot will have the same number of parking spots as today.
