Tech Sets Workplace Training Sessions

SOCORRO, N.M. November 11, 2015 – New Mexico Tech is providing employee training that focuses on developing and maintaining a respectful workplace this week, with expert presenters.

The effort is part of Tech’s efforts with Title IX and the Clery Act, as well as reach toward goals outlined in the five-year strategic plan.  The Human Resources Office has set up six training sessions this week. 

The presenters are Dr. Steven G. Meilleur, senior vice president at Poms and Associates Risk Services, and Dr. Frank Reinow, associate professor of management at Tech.

Meilleur manages the Poms Connects web-based resource center and is a regular contributor to blogs, webinars and other reference sources. He has more than 40 years experience in human resources and business management. He is a faculty member with the UNM School of Public Administration graduate program.

Reinow joined the New Mexico Tech faculty in 2008, after teaching management and public administration at UNM. He has been an active management consultant for business and government organizations with a focus on strategic management, human resources and organizational improvement. He has conducted in-house and public management and supervisory training workshops in New Mexico and across the Southwest.

Workshop 1 is for all employees and will be presented four times. Workshop 2 is for supervisors.

Workshop 1: Building a Respectful Workplace 

Respect, dignity, and professionalism are keys to a respectful workplace.  This workshop provides an opportunity for us to discuss the workplace we want to work in and how each of us can help make it happen.   For 90 minutes, we will focus on the following topics:

  • Personal behaviors and conduct that contribute to a respectful workplace
  • Unlawful discrimination and harassment
  • Workplace bullying and abusive conduct
  • Reporting incidents of workplace discrimination, harassment, and bullying

Audience: All NM Tech employees, supervisors, and managers

Workshop 2: Supervisor’s Responsibility for Preventing Workplace Discrimination, Harassment and Bullying This workshop is a follow up to Seminar 1. As a supervisor, manager or director, you are legally responsible for addressing unlawful workplace discrimination and harassment in all its forms.  For 60 minutes, we will focus on the following topics: 

•              Overview of federal laws affecting workplace conduct

•              Your legal duties and responsibilities as a supervisor, manager, or director

•              Options for taking corrective action
