49ers Weekend Full Of Fun Events

SOCORRO, N.M. October 6, 2015 – The annual 49ers Celebration includes all the favorite festivities. Once again, Tech students and alumni are encourage to participate in the 'Paint the M' event. After several years of waning participation, this event has enjoyed a surge in popularity in the past few years. Students in particular are encouraged to carry 50-pound bags of lime, which is then used to give the 'M' a shiny new surface. Alumni are invited to participate as well.

Anyone interested must pre-register by emailing paintm@nmt.edu by noon Thursday, Oct. 15. Participants must be at the Facilities Management parking lot at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, to register and catch a shuttle to the departure area. All participants must sign a waiver and then will receive a numbered bib and a free T-shirt. Community members can participate for $20. Transportation will be available to the top of the mountain for any student who is physically unable to walk. Students can contact paintm@nmt.edu for transportation options.

This year's 49ers kicks off with movie night on Wednesday and Comedy Night on Thursday. Returning for a second year is TECH Talks, a series of presentations modeled after TED Talks. This will be in Fidel Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

The Advancement Office and the Student Government Association have a full lineup of events.

Wednesday, October 14

  • Movie Night: 8 p.m. in Workman 101. Dress as your favorite Greek god!
  • Engineering Barbecue, 5 to 7 p.m. between Workman Center and Jones Hall. All students are welcome. Hosted by the AIChE and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society
  • SAB-sponsored Scavenger Hunt begins!

 

Thursday, October 15

  • Alumni registration will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Atrium of Fidel Center. Alumni can sign in for the weekend's events.
  • Tours of the Mineral Museum at the Bureau of Geology will be available at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Meet in the Atrium of Fidel Center
  • Tech Talks! from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Faculty and alumni will deliver fun and informative talks about science, engineering, discovery, careers, life and more. $10 for alumni; $20 for others; FREE for current students and faculty. Third floor ballrooms of the Fidel Center
  • Diversity in STEM Panel, 4 to 6 p.m. in the Fidel Center ballrooms.
  • Fun and Games on the Athletic Field:
  • Volleyball starts at 4 p.m.: North Hall vs. South Hall; President's vs. Driscoll
  • Hotdog Eating Challenge, Gallon Challenge, Pie-Eating Contest, starting at 5 p.m.
  • 49ers Opening Reception for alumni and students – 6 to 8 p.m. on the patio at the Capitol Bar. Alumni and current students will play music from 1965 and 1990 to commemorate the 25th and 50th year alumni.
  • Tour of the new Mineral Museum at the Bureau of Geology building at 4 p.m.
  • SAB event Comedy Night featuring Eddie Ifft. 8 p.m. at Macey
  • Vigilante Band at the Capital Bar – 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

 

Friday, October 16

  • Students, employees, alumni and community members are invited to participate in the Paint the 'M' event, a.k.a. the 'M' Mountain Run. Registration deadline is noon Thursday, Oct. 15. Email paintm@nmt.edu to register. The run begins at 9 a.m. Meet in the parking lot between the golf course and Facilities Management. Participants will be treated to lunch at the top of the mountain. The first 20 students (or teams) to reach the top with a bag of lime get cash prizes. Transportation will be available to the top of the mountain for any student who is physically unable to walk. Students can contact paintm@nmt.edu for transportation options.

  • Car Smash! Engineers Without Borders is hosting a car smash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot by the Athletic Field.

  • Society of Petroleum Engineers' Gold Rush golf tournament: One flight starting at 9:30 a.m. Lunch provided and awards. Call 575-835-5412 for more information or visit www.nmt.edu/~spe.
  • Magdalena Ridge Observatory tours: Meet at 11:45 a.m. at the post office in the Fidel Center for a noon departure. $25 for alumni or $15 for students, includes lunch, transportation and tour.
  • SAB Events on the Athletic Field: Paint Your Shirt, Slip and Slide, More Field Games, Live Music, Scavenger Hunt Prizes will be awarded.
  • SAB Event: Rugby Tailgate 3 p.m.
  • Rugby! Black and Blue Match featuring the Pygmies vs. the Ancestors. 4:30 p.m. on the Athletic Field.
  • Alumni reception and auction at 5 p.m. in the Bureau of Geology. Proceeds will support the Alumni Lifetime Scholarship
  • Waffle Rave 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. SAC
  • The Vigilante Band at the Capital Bar; Live music at the Bodega Lounge. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

 

Saturday, October 17

  • Bookstore special hours – open 8 a.m. to noon – for alumni and friends.
  • Electrical Engineering Department 25th anniversary brunch, north side of Workman Center.
  • 49ers Parade: This year's theme is "Geek Gods." 11 a.m. on California Street. Lineup starts at 10 a.m. Contact Kiane Pound at 575-835-5618 or kpound@admin.nmt.edu to register your parade entry.
  • After parade fun: Entertainment for all ages on the Socorro Plaza -- arts, crafts, food, fun and games. Starting at noon or immediately following parade.
  • Beard and 'Stache Competition at 12:30 p.m.
  • MC Scavenger Hunt, 1 to 5 p.m.
  • New Mexico Tech Alumni Association annual general meeting. New officers and board members will be elected. 1 p.m. in Workman 101.
  • Casino Night and Silent Auction, 4 to 11 p.m. at Macey Center. Student, alumni and friends are welcome.
  • Alumni Soccer Game 5 p.m. Athletic Field
  • Minecraft Team Survival: 6 to 10 p.m. in Speare 23.
  • 49ers Miner Dinner, 5 to 10 p.m. in the SAC, hosted by Tech Chess Club and NMT Grace Life

  • Victor J. Saracini Memorial fundraiser. Hosted by the Alumni Association. Free to Tech alumni, friends, students with Tech ID, the class of 1990 and 1965 and the Electrical Engineering 21-and-over. Social hours is 5 to 6 p.m. Live music and food from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bodega Burger Co. (Victor Saracini was a Tech graduate who was one of the pilots who died in the 9/11 attacks).
  • Class of 1990 25th year reunion dinner and Class of 1965 50th year reunion dinner: 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bodega in conjunction with the Saracini fundraiser.   • The annual 49ers Celebration wraps up with an alumni farewell brunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at El Camino restaurant.
  • Soccer tailgate party at 10 a.m., followed by soccer games at 11 a.m.
