Regents Approve Demolition Of Old Bureau Building

SOCORRO, N.M. August 26, 2015 – The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents met in special session in early August to discuss upcoming construction projects.

The Board approved demolition of the now-vacant Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources building and approved putting a new chemistry building in its place.

Those decisions are formalities, since both projects had previously been approved by the Board and since the state G.O. Bond appropriation to fund this project had already been approved by the voters in the last general election. Both projects now require state approval, first from the Higher Education Department and then the Department of Finance and Administration.

Once both state agencies approve of both demolition and construction, Tech will raze the vacant Bureau building. Demolition will likely commence in late October or November.

New Mexico voters approved a $15 million bond for construction of the new chemistry building in the fall 2014 general election. Demolition of the old Bureau of Geology building is funded as part of the construction funding for the new building.
