Energy Expert Presents Battery Breakthroughs In Santa Fe

SANTA FE, N.M. March 16, 2015 – New Mexico Tech and the Center for Energy Policy is hosting a guest speaker Dr. Donald Sadoway, professor of chemistry and materials at MIT, for an open forum at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe at 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19

Dr. Donald Sadoway of M.I.T. will present a talk in Santa Fe, hosted by New Mexico Tech.

 

State officials, the N.M. science and technology community, national labs and military research have been invited.  Commercial interests are expected to attend.

Sadoway will talk about his new breakthrough liquid metal batteries that will revolutionize energy storage and transmission. He will also present a lithium substitution strategy using everyday earth materials and a new metallurgy that will democratize metals usage (lower cost) for strategic and commercial applications.

Sadoway will present in the manner of his science and invention orientation seen by 30,000 MIT students. He has been recognized as one of the 100 most important scientists in the world by Time magazine.

Dr. Van Romero, Tech Vice President of Research, said he is looking forward to learning the details about Sadoway’s new technology because of the potential impact on energy storage and New Mexico industry.

“Whenever we talk about renewable energy, one of the hurdles we have to overcome is better battery technology,” Romero said. “Because of the intermittent nature of alternative energy, we need to store it, so improving our battery technology is important.”

Romero said that Sadoway and his research group are considering locations for manufacturing this next generation of batteries and New Mexico is prime for this sort of industry.

Dr. Daniel Fine, director of the Center for Energy Policy, said Sadoway’s research is moving towards a replacement for the lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric vehicles.

“Liquid metal batteries will be the breakthrough for alternative energy transmission world-wide,” he said. “Dr. Sadoway also has a metallurgy breakthrough, which is molten salt electrolysis and will basically provide metals availability at a very low cost,” Fine said. “That is also of interest to mining in the state. New Mexico has the potential to become a center for battery chemistry and research.”
