Tech Hosting Petroleum Research Contest

SOCORRO, N.M. January 29, 2015 – The New Mexico Tech student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers will host the SPE Southwestern North America Regional Student Paper Contest on March 13 and 14 in Socorro.

Five universities will compete in the bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. divisions: New Mexico Tech, Texas Tech, University of Texas-Austin, University of Texas-Permian Basin, and Arizona State University.

The Petroleum Engineering Department held a contest in early spring, with each participant giving a 10-minute presentation. Each talk was peer-reviewed prior to being presented to a panel of judges, professors and students.  Five petroleum/SPE students will compete. Tech’s entry in the Ph.D. competition is Hiep Phan. The master’s students presenting research are Arash Memarzadeh and Brittni Romero. The undergraduate students are Lindsey Rasmussen and Lynda Thay.

This is an important event for students to share research, network, learn from experts and learn about career opportunities. The top winners in the region advance to the international contest at ATCE in Houston. Last year, Tech student Issah Abdallah won at the department, regional and placed third in the international competition..

The Ph.D. competition will be in the afternoon of Friday, Marcy 13. The master’s and undergraduate competitions will be all day Saturday, March 14. An awards dinner will be Saturday evening. Tickets are $25 for non-participants. For more information, contact Karen Balch at kmbalch@nmt.edu or 835-5412.
