Tech Hosts State Collegiate Rugby Championships

SOCORRO, N.M. March 31, 2014 – The New Mexico Tech Rugby Club will cap its 40-year anniversary by hosting the Rio Grande Rugby Football Union Collegiate Championship April 5. Concluding two seasons of round-robin competition the University of New Mexico Lobos, New Mexico State University Chiles, and the University of Texas at El Paso Miners will join Tech in a four-team playoff. An interstate high school girls' match and a women's collegiate exhibition will round out a busy day of rugby on the NMT campus.

New Mexico Tech's Pygmies are seeded number two with a record of 3 wins and 3 losses dating back to September 2013. The Pygmies have beaten NMSU once, UTEP twice, and dropped both matches to UNM. They will open the day's action against third seed New Mexico State (2 - 4) at 10:00 a.m.

UNM rides into town with an unblemished 6 - 0 record to claim the number one seed. They will square off against fourth-seeded UTEP (1 - 5) at 11:15 a.m. The semifinal losers will meet to settle third place at 1:40 p.m. with the winners advancing to the championship match at 4:00 p.m.

The Lady Spartans, a team of players 19 years and younger from El Paso, will take on the Sugar Skulls, their counterparts from Albuquerque, at 12:30. A women's collegiate exhibition featuring players from the NMT Queens, New Mexico Highlands Amazons, NMSU Lady Chiles, and El Paso Desert Dames kicks off at 2:50 p.m.
