Distance Education Launches Virtual Tour

SOCORRO, N.M. March 1, 2013 – Tech’s Educational Outreach and Distance Instruction department has created an online virtual tour of the institution’s multimedia-rich, Distance Education-ready “Smart” classrooms and collaboration spaces.

Filled with photos and technical information to help faculty, students, and visitors become acclimated to the resources of the 25 (and growing) “Smart” and Distance Education classrooms on campus, the site can be found at http://distance.nmt.edu/rooms.

Most of the rooms are equipped with cameras and microphones, projectors, document cameras, LCD screens, and touch-sensitive instructor displays for controlling and annotating course content. The cameras and microphones allow instructors to participate in live interactive sessions with guest speakers and students from anywhere in the world. In addition, most rooms are equipped to allow the recording of lectures, providing an effective means of review for students as well as a resource for students who must miss a session because of illness or travel.

The equipment for most of the rooms was funded by federal Department of Education grants.
