Tech Enrollment Reaches New High Of 2,100
UPDATE: SOCORRO, N.M. August 28, 2012– New Mexico Tech once again has a record-setting student population this year, with 2,100 students enrolled. Last year's official total was 2,009.
The figures are unofficial, as of Tuesday, August 28. The official fall enrollment will be set on “census day,” which is Friday, Sept. 7. The undergraduate population has grown 11.4 percent from last fall.
Tech has 483 new students, including 373 freshmen and 110 transfers. The total undergraduate population is 1,626. Tech has 485 graduate students, including 90 new grad students. Last year, the number of new undergraduate students was a then-record 416. This year marks a 16.6 percent increase from last year.
Mike Kloeppel, Director of the Admission Office, said he and his staff haven’t made drastic changes to their recruiting methods. They have made minor changes and focused on consistency. Recruiters have taken to using email more often and Tech has developed online registration.
“Overall, everyone is just doing their job,” he said. “We could get eight students from Seattle this year and next year we may get just one. There’s no real rhyme or reason for why more students are coming here geographically.”
Tech has growing enrollment from all main areas: Albuquerque metro, the rest of New Mexico and out-of-state students, Kloeppel said.
Melissa Jaramillo-Fleming, Vice President of Student and University Relations, said Tech is enjoying a nationwide trend of more students opting for studies in engineering, science and technology.
