UPDATE: Campus Closed Friday Due To Minimal Heat

SOCORRO, N.M. 2 p.m. February 3, 2011 -- Due to the lack of sufficient heat in campus buildings, New Mexico Tech administrators have decided to remain closed Friday. Classes and regular business will resume Monday, February 7.

(Employees who want to pick up their paychecks tomorrow may do so at the Cashier's Office from 8 a.m. noon Friday.)

High demand for natural gas has created problems for heating systems statewide. Campus is suffering from poor heating in many buildings, including most dorms. Heating problems are expected to continue through the night Thursday and Facilities Management crews do not expect mechanical systems to be operating optimally once they all thaw.

Students are encouraged to return home, if possible. Students who live on campus and stay in Socorro are welcome to spend the night in the Fidel Center, which is expected to be relatively warm. The third floor ballroom will be open at 7 p.m. for those wishing to stay. Those students should bring their own bedding (mattress / cot / sleeping back, etc.). The game room will be open and movies will be shown. Staff members and R.A.'s will be present all night.

SOCORRO, N.M. 3:30 p.m. February 2, 2011 -- Classes are cancelled again Thursday. Campus will be closed except for essential personnel.

Tech administrators anticipate icy conditions on campus and on area roads, considering that overnight lows will be around -5 F. For the safety of students and employees, campus will remain closed to official business Thursday.

SOCORRO, N.M. 7 a.m. February 2, 2011 -- Campus is closed today and all classes are cancelled, due to icy, dangerous road conditions.

Administrators are closely monitoring the weather and road conditions with an eye towards Thursday's schedule. A decision will be made later Wednesday regarding Thursday classes.

All non-essential offices will be closed.

The cafeteria will be open; campus police and Facilities Management will be on duty; First Responders classes at EMRTC will continue.

Closed: Academic departments, Brown Hall, Wells Hall, Skeen Library, offices on the second floor of the Fidel Center, the Swim Center, the gym, all other "non-essential offices."

Employees who are unsure of their status should call their supervisor.

SOCORRO, N.M. February 1, 2011 – New Mexico Tech administrators have decided to close campus at 4 p.m. today and re-open at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Updates on Tech's schedule will be delivered to the three Albuquerque TV stations (for instance, if Tech administrators decide to stay closed beyond 10 a.m. tomorrow), on the Tech website, and on Facebook here and here.

All classes that start at 4 p.m. or later today are cancelled. All classes that start before 10 a.m. tomorrow are cancelled.

All employees may leave at 4 p.m. today and return at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Socorro and the Tech campus are currently being hit with snowfall, which is expected to continue into Wednesday.

University President Dr. Daniel H. Lopez, after consulting with the vice presidents, determined that limited hours will allow employees and students to contend with weather issues.
