SOCORRO, N.M., December 19, 2001 -- William Dean Stone, associate professor of mathematics at New Mexico Tech, has been named the recipient of the Southwestern Section of the Mathematical Association of America's (MAA) annual distinguished teaching award.
The MAA's section awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics honor mathematics professors whose teaching effectiveness has been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions.
Stone has been at New Mexico Tech for 16 years, teaching mostly upper-level courses in differential equations and other topics in applied and industrial mathematics.
In addition to teaching, he has worked on several interdisciplinary research projects at Tech in various diverse fields, such as hydrology, microbiology, and physics.
Stone's recent MAA honor does not mark the first time he has ever received such an award: in 1992, Stone received the New Mexico Tech Distinguished Teaching Award.
The MAA is the world's largest organization devoted to the interests of collegiate mathematics.
