Campus Police Set Live Action Drill For Saturday

SOCORRO, N.M. August 5, 2010 -- New Mexico Tech police chief Billy Romero is organizing a training exercise related to responding to an “active shooter” on campus on Saturday.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, police officers from several agencies will conduct the drill at Brown Hall in order to better prepare themselves for a potentially dangerous situation. The campus community and local residents should not be alarmed by the exercise. The team will conduct a walk-through at 10 a.m. Friday.

Officers from the City of Socorro Police Department, Socorro County Sheriff’s Department and the N.M. State Police will participate in the exercise, as well as an FBI liaison officer.

Vice President of Finance Lonnie Marquez, who is also chair of the campus Emergency Response Team, said the drill is part of the campus’s larger preparedness training program.
