Construction Altered To Minimize Finals Week Disruptions

UPDATE April 28, 2010 -- The hot water loop contractors have begun digging trenches for the lateral lines that will connect Brown Hall, the Gym and Wells Hall to the main conduit. That work will continue through at least May 7.

Crews have halted work in the neighborhood of Weir, Cramer and the Library until finals week is completed. Instead, crews are connecting the gym, Wells and Brown Hall to the main conduit this week and next.

When work in Zone 1 is completed, work crews will begin trenching at the north end of Zone 2 to minimize noise and disruptions around Weir and Cramer during finals week.

UPDATE April 23, 2010 -- Tech and the contractor are trying to minimize disruptions in foot traffic and parking. New Mexico Tech and TLC Plumbing have agreed to amend the schedule of work for construction of a new hot water loop. Work in the neighborhood of Weir Hall, Cramer Hall and the Skeen Library will be delayed until after the spring semester ends.

In the meantime, work continues in Area 1, with one crew installing new pipe northward towards Weir, while a second crew backfills the southern portion of Area 1. During the week of April 26-30, crews will begin extending lateral lines from the main conduit to Brown Hall, Wells Hall and the gym.

Some portions of sidewalk are being removed in Zone 1, creating noise and more foot traffic disruptions, specifically near Brown, Wells, Cramer and the gym.

Also, the electrical contractor expects to begin working on the north side of MSEC next week (April 26-30).

Rough Schedule

  • Area 1 includes Fitch Hall, Driscoll Hall, Wells Hall, Brown Hall, Tech Gym and Cramer Hall, through June.
  • Area 2 includes Skeen Library, Weir Hall, MSEC, Speare Hall and ISD, scheduled from April to July.
  • Area 3 includes Jones Annex, Fidel Center and Workman, scheduled from June to September.
  • Area 4 includes the Gold Building and the PRRC, scheduled from August to October.
  • Area 5 includes Macey Center and Jones Hall, scheduled for October.
  • Area 6 includes West Hall, Presidents Hall and the SAC, scheduled for October to November.

UPDATE April 16, 2010 -- New Mexico Tech and TLC Plumbing have agreed to amend the schedule of work for construction of a new hot water loop. Work in Zone 2 will be delayed until after the spring semester ends, so that student foot traffic in the neighborhood of Weir Hall, Cramer Hall and the Skeen Library will not be impeded.

TLC crews will confine their work to areas of lower foot traffic until after commencement on May 15.

In the meantime, work continues in Area 1, with one crew installing new pipe northward towards Weir, while a second crew backfills the southern portionof Area 1.

UPDATE April 7, 2010 – This major construction project is providing the campus with a much-needed, updated hot water loop. The project will cause disruptions in foot traffic and parking and will create plenty of noise.

TLC Plumbing crews are installing new pipe in the first section of Area 1 and are beginning to dig the second section of trench. As the water main is installed, one crew has already started backfilling the first section of trench as the first crew continues digging the trench towards Weir Hall and installing new pipe.

The crew that was cutting into basement walls and floors in Zone 1 is finished for now.

The electrical contractor is also at work in Area 1 and 2. They will begin digging on the west side of MSEC in the next week or two.
Construction crews work four 10-hour days: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; however, crews may work nights and weekends during crucial times of the project.

The work will be conducted in phases to minimize disruptions in utility services.
