Convocation Officially Kicks Off 2018 Fall Semester

Magic show, guest speakers, and giveaways highlight special event

 

SOCORRO, N.M. – New Mexico Tech officially kicked off the fall 2018 semester with the Convocation ceremony that included an alumnus guest speaker, a magician, President Wells, and free giveaways.

Convocation serves as the official welcome to all new students. Academic department chairs, research division directors, and staff members attended the event, as well as resident assistants and other returning students.

Kayla Drescher performing magic at Macey CenterStudent Affairs Director Michael Voegerl served as emcee of the event, tossing T-shirts into the crowded auditorium at Macey Center with assistance from Alpha Kappa sorority members.

University president Dr. Stephen Wells gave an introductory address, encouraging students to make connections and get involved. Dean of the Arts Dr. Bill Stone gave a short address about his No. 1 rule for students – “Go to class and do your homework.”

Magician Kayla Drescher (pictured on stage) impressed everyone in attendance with her show. She involved students at several points during her show. She also involved V.P. of Finance Cleve McDaniel for a mimed date as well and Dr. Glenn Spinelli for a card trick.

Rebecca Bonnett, a 2006 graduate in chemical engineering, delivered the keynote address, recounting how New Mexico Tech influenced her life and her career. Bonnett is a senior engineering with Freeport McMoRan at the Tyrone Mine near Silver City, N.M. She encouraged incoming freshmen to get involved in campus activities and discover the many resources available on campus. She also encouraged students to work on leadership and communication skills.

Faculty members lingered in the jam-packed Macey Center lobby to interact with students after the event. Students were then treated to a pizza party at the Swim Center.
