SOCORRO, N.M. – The 2018 Commencement ceremony at New Mexico Tech will feature more than 300 students participating. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 12, on the lawn north of Brown Hall.

Once again this year the Academic Center for Technology will be offering a live webcast of the commencement ceremony. Viewers can access the webcast at https://tinyurl.com/ycbhogf4.

The ceremony will feature keynote speaker Dr. Terry Wallace, director of Los Alamos National Laboratories and NMT graduate. Wallace earned his bachelor’s in 1978 in geophysics and math. He earned his master’s and Ph.D. at Cal Tech. After spending 20 years teaching at the University of Arizona, he returned to Los Alamos. He was named the director in 2017.

Graduating senior Gabriel Montoya is the student speaker. A former president of the Student Government Association, Montoya is earning his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. He has committed to a doctoral program at Purdue University.

The Class of 2018 includes about 450 graduates – about 300 bachelor’s recipients, 130 master’s recipients and 16 Ph.D.’s. The Class of 2018 (including those not participating in graduation) is the second-largest ever. Last year’s graduating class included 475 students.

The ceremony is open to the public. Friends and family who attend graduation are encouraged to bring chairs, since limited bleacher seating will be available. Water and sunscreen are advisable as well. Campus police will provide shuttle service from the parking lot on College Avenue. Immediately following the ceremony, everyone is invited to an open reception on the south side of Brown Hall for snacks and refreshments.

Also, the Alumni Relations Office will have a professional photographer on hand to take portraits of graduates with their families immediately after the event.

A recording of the commencement will be available from the same link shortly after the end of the ceremony. https://tinyurl.com/ycbhogf4
