Tech's men's rugby club has advanced to the Western USA Rugby Football Union's Division II collegiate playoffs, to be contested in Dallas the weekend of April 5 & 6. Tech will take on Sam Houston State University, the #1 seed from the Texas Rugby Union. Sam Houston State, with a student population of about 13,000, placed in the Final Four of USA Rugby's national division II championships in 2002. Tech will be competing for a berth in the national "Sweet Sixteen" tournament April 19-20 in Huntsville, Texas. The national champion will be decided in San Jose, California in May.
Tech's rugby team will raise funds for the trip to Dallas through sales of commemorative shirts and concessions March 29, as they observe the proclamation of "New Mexico Tech Rugby Day" with a 1 p.m. match at home. T shirts will also soon be on sale at Follet's campus bookstore.
