SOCORRO, N.M., Sept. 17, 2003 -- New Mexico Tech is kicking off its latest North Central Association (NCA) re-accreditation process next week with a less-than-formal event that promises to be great fun for everyone involved.

The kick-off event, the“Tech Smart 2004 Quadrathlon,” which will be held on Tuesday through Thursday, September 23-25, will combine the seriousness of filling out evaluation surveys about New Mexico Tech with the lightheartedness of a Tech trivia contest, all put together in a block-party atmosphere.

“Tech Smart 2004 Quadrathlon is designed to allow everyone — everyone from the local community to Tech faculty, staff, and students — to get actively involved and become part of the self-study process leading up to next year’s NCA re-accreditation review,” says Carole Yee, assistant vice president for academic affairs and dean of students at New Mexico Tech.

The NCA’s Higher Learning Commission has scheduled an institutional review and evaluation of New Mexico Tech for October 2004, part of a formal re-accreditation process that takes place at accredited institutions every ten years.

“In preparation for next year’s NCA campus visit, we’re beginning with this initial survey as part of an intensive, yearlong self-study which will cover all aspects of the university, including academics, research, economic development, and educational and community outreach,” Yee relates.

“Our number one objective in this whole self-study process is to have engagement by all of our constituencies, particularly in the way of awareness, feedback, and support,” she adds.

As part of Tech Smart 2004 Quadrathlon, participants will be able to compete in a series of New Mexico Tech trivia contests, with prizes for top finishers, and refreshments and door prizes for all in attendance.

The Tech Smart 2004 Quadrathlon events schedule for next week is as follows:

  • Tuesday, September 23, 4:30 p.m. at the quadrangle between Wells and Brown halls;
  • Tuesday, September 23, 6:15 p.m. at La Raj patio area, just south of the Tech Gym;
  • Wednesday, September 24, noon at the M Mountain Grille, next to the Tech Golf Shop; and
  • Thursday, September 25, 11 a.m. at the historic Socorro Plaza.
