Donation Made to Music Program at New Mexico Tech

SOCORRO, N.M., Feb. 6, 2009 – Dr. Eileen Comstock and Warren Marts have made a donation of $1500 to New Mexico Tech’s music program and they will match donations until Sept. 30.
Comstock and Marts, who are both Tech alumni, have been longtime supporters of the Music Program. Several years ago, they donated two pianos for practice rooms.
According to Comstock, “If you’re very busy, and you do music in addition, you get more done.” Both she and her husband regard the Music Program as a form of relaxation and fun that Tech students need to counterbalance their heavy workloads.
The couple are well-known to Socorro audiences as participants in many Tech musical activities. Comstock directed “Fiddler on the Roof” several years ago, and Marts directed “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Over the years, they have sung in choruses and played instruments in orchestras countless times. Comstock directs the Socorro Community Concert Band, which has occasionally been offered as a Tech Community College class.
Comstock and Marts directed that the money be used at the discretion of the Music Program, to serve areas of greatest need. The program has several performances planned for later this spring. A cabaret-style performance of Rogers and Hart songs is planned for April 17, 18, and 19, under the direction of Paul Barrientos, who also directs a student vocal ensemble called the “Geek Lub.” The Tech/Community Orchestra, directed by Dr. Dawn Chambers, also plans a spring concert.
According to Cheryl Pulaski, Director for Advancement at New Mexico Tech, “This is a wonderful gift, which can help the Music Program immediately and can spur further donations.”
Comstock and Marts will match donations up to $3500 over their original donations. Persons wanting to contribute should contact the Advancement Office at 575-835-5525.
