Tech Rolls Out Text Message Emergency Alert System, July 25, 2008

SOCORRO, N.M., July 25, 2008 – In an effort to enhance safety and security on New Mexico Tech campus, the university Emergency Response Team has implemented an emergency text message alert system.

“We encourage all students, faculty, and staff with cell phones to participate in this system,” said Lonnie Marquez, Vice President of Finance and Administration. “We believe this will allow quicker communications in case of emergency.”

Students at the state-supported research university will receive a letter in their campus post office box with information and instructions on the system. Signs will be posted across campus informing students, faculty and staff about the new safety plan.

  2. Select ‘Enter Secure Area’
  3. Log into Banweb using your Tech ID number (Banner 900- account number) and password
  4. Select ‘Personal Information’
  5. Select ‘Emergency Text Messaging Opt-In/Opt-Out.’

Cell phones must be able to accept text messages and be fully functional in Socorro. It will only work if you keep your contact number current. In addition, the University will not share cell phone numbers with any third parties and it will be kept in a secure location only to be used for the emergency alert system.
