SOCORRO, N.M., March 20, 2007 – New Mexico Tech undergraduates Thomas Erbes and Jonathan Gardner are the winners of the first round of a statewide student speech contest sponsored by Citizens' Alliance for Responsible Energy (CARE), a New Mexico-based nonprofit organization.
Erbes, who is majoring in chemical engineering, and Gardner, who is majoring in management, were both awarded $1,000 scholarships by CARE for delivering their award-winning speeches at a regional competition held yesterday on the university campus. They are now eligible to compete at the CARE Statewide Student Speech Contest final competition on April 19 at the State Land Office in Santa Fe.
The New Mexico Tech students and four other regional finalists will give their oral presentations before a panel of judges made up of industry leaders, government representatives, professional speakers and civic group decision makers. The winning presenter will receive the $5,000 Embrace Scholarship. In addition, some of the finalists may be selected to give their presentations to civic organizations throughout the state.
