Lopez Receives NM Public Service Award, April 28, 2000

Dr. Daniel H. Lopez

SOCORRO, N.M. April 24, 2000 -- Daniel H. López, president of New Mexico Tech, has been named one of this year's 12 recipients of the notable 31st Annual New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Awards.

López and 11 other New Mexicans were lauded at a recent Roundhouse ceremony at the state capitol by Governor Gary Johnson for ". . . the work you have all done for New Mexico . . . and for making a difference in the quality of life in this state."

Each year, the Governor and the board of the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Awards select several award winners in recognition of their outstanding contributions to public service in their respective communities.

Recipients of this year's awards also will be honored at a formal banquet on May 12 at the Crowne Plaza Pyramid Hotel in Albuquerque.

In particular, López was cited for his award in recognition of having provided more than a quarter century of public service and was most recently credited with "dramatically improving faculty, staff, and student relationships at New Mexico Tech."

López, a native of Puerto de Luna, a village near Santa Rosa, has served as president of state-supported research university since 1993.
