How to Apply

Eligibility

UBMS is funded to help first-generation and low-income students succeed in high school and get into college. To be eligible for the program, students must:

  • EITHER meet US Department of Education’s Income Guidelines
  • OR qualify as first-generation college-bound (neither parent/guardian holds a bachelor’s degree)
  • Demonstrate an interest in attending college to pursue a degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Techniology, Engineering, Mathematics)
  • Demonstrate an academic or social need for program services
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Attend one of the following high schools:
    • Highland High School
    • Manzano High School
    • West Mesa High School

 

To Apply

2. Submit a writing sample by email to kgriess@admin.nmt.edu. You MUST choose from ONE of the following topics for your essay. Your essay will be used to judge your writing ability. In addition, we hope to gain a better understanding of your academic and career interests. Please note, we do not expect a formal research paper; instead, we want a well-written and detailed essay based on your knowledge, interest and understanding of ONE of the topics listed below. Your essay needs to be between 250 – 500 words. Remember, it is always to your advantage to have your paper proofread before submitting the final copy!

  • Physics of throwing a baseball
  • Space exploration
  • DNA mapping
  • Robotics
  • Statistics in every day life
  • Future of the internet
  • Building a computer
  • Medical research
  • Programming video games
  • Steroid testing in sports

  • Importance of math in science & technology
  • Engineering behind America's freeway system
  • Water pollution
  • Relevance of chemistry in everyday life
  • Other - you may choose your own topic as long as it deals with a math, science, engineering or technology issue
