The Academic YearIn-School TutoringAll participants are required to attend tutoring twice a week during a one hour session before school or after school. Tutoring develops the skills and motivation needed to succeed in high school and college. The schedule is established so that tutoring is available at each target school two days a week. Tutoring is available in all subject areas. In addition, ACT test preparation, as well as college and financial aid application assistance, is available during UB tutoring sessions. The Saturday Program-UB Learning InstituteAll participants attend a Saturday program at New Mexico Tech once a month from October through May. Transportation and meals will be provided for the participants. The Saturday program offers students workshops in Writing, Science, Computers and Math that are taught by master high school teachers and/or college instructors. Activities will include workshops, seminars, field trips, laboratory experiences, and research projects. Components of the Institute will have college preparatory curriculum courses, writing across the curriculum, reading, and mentoring. Our activities and components will intensify, enhance, empower, and develop skills for our participants. Parents are expected to take an active role in their child's participation in the program. The Academic session culminates with an awards banquet for students and their families. The Mentoring and Peer Assistant ComponentOur program provides UB participants additional assistance and support. College faculty, college students, college alumni, community business leaders, and upper classmen/women mentor under classmen/women as peer mentoring is a supportive tool for program participants. |
