Notes from the May 12, 2005 Regents Meeting

SOCORRO – The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents has approved a $164 million operating budget for Fiscal Year 2005-2006 at the state-supported research university. The approved budget, which is scheduled to go into effect on July 1, will now be forwarded to the New Mexico Department of Higher Education for its consideration.

During its May 13 meeting, the New Mexico Tech Board of Regents also approved the appointments of two new faculty members at the university: Thomas A. Duffey was appointed to the full-time, tenure-track position of associate professor of mechanical engineering; and Bixiang Wang was appointed to the full-time, tenure-track position of assistant professor of mathematics.

The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents also was informed that a sabbatical leave had been granted to Mark P. Cal, associate professor of environmental engineering with the university’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and chair of that department as well.

In addition, the university’s governing board also was informed of several recent expenditures of $100,000 or more that were made with the school’s restricted funds, including the following:

• the procurement of services of Science Applications International Corporation in support of the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) Tunnel Testing Program (total cost over two years is $999,975);
• the procurement of services of Applied Research Associates in support of the TSWG program (total cost over two years is $966,599);
• a subcontract with Perrault Structural Products, Inc. to support the TSWG program (total cost over two years is $700,500);
• a subcontract with Weidlinger Associates, Inc. to support the TSWG program (total cost over two years is $2,538,209);
• a subcontract with Kaarogozian & Case to support the TSWG program (total cost over two years is $1,287,667);
  the procurement of services of Baker Risk Consultants to support the TSWG program (total cost over two years is $100,000); and
• a contract with Rio Conchos Corporation for the construction of the 2.5-meter telescope enclosure for the university’s Magdalena Ridge Observatory, with a submitted low bid of $2,060,000.
