Tech Students Take Top Programming Honorsby George ZamoraSOCORRO, NM, March 6, 1998 --Three New Mexico Tech students majoring in computer science took top honors at the recent 14th Annual Fort Lewis College Computer Programming Contest in Durango, Colo. Ben Sittler, Jeff Studer, and Thomee Wright solved five out of seven programs with computer programs written on the spot. No other team solved more than three problems. Solving the problems posed at the regional programming contest required using computer programs which the students developed "on-site" with the programming languages C++ or C. The problems included writing programs to explore a maze, check the computations on an income tax return, and provide registration information for a seminar. Sittler, a graduate of Socorro High School, reported that the way the solution was printed--even down to blank lines and spacing on the line--was a vital part of a correct answer. Tech fielded a total of six teams, placing first, third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eleventh. Faculty advisor for the Tech teams was Dr. Allan Stavely, associate professor of computer science.
