Capital Campaign Begins for Children's Center

SOCORRO, N.M., July 27, 2007 – The capital campaign for a new children’s center at New Mexico Tech has been officially kicked off by an alumni event on July 26, announcing plans to match private donations received through Dec. 31, 2007. The new Children's Center is planned to replace the current one, which was made from an older, remodeled house and has a long waiting list. The new center, as planned, will be New Mexico Tech’s first LEED building, which will meet the nationally accepted benchmarks for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.

An effective child care center is essential for students and faculty at New Mexico Tech, who can take and teach classes while knowing that their children are well-cared-for. The Children's Center also serves residents of Socorro, who may send their children there. However, a child care center is not paid for by state appropriations. The $2 million cost of the building, plus a $500,000 endowment to fund maintenance and operations, will be raised through private donations. An anonymous donor has agreed to match all private donations received through Dec. 31, 2007, dollar for dollar up to $700,000.
