NM Tech Computer Science Program Receives Intel Equipment

by Shawna Carter

SOCORRO, N.M., Jan. 20, 2006 — New Mexico Tech computer science professor Xiao Qin and his research partner Dongwan Shin recently received cutting-edge research and educational equipment from Intel that will be used in the university’s computer labs and classes.

The equipment includes ten reference design platforms that are equipped with Intel’s state-of-the-art “XScale” technology, which will be used to enhance current computer science courses, create new computer science courses, as well as investigate hand-held device security.

“These platforms use Intel application processors, which provide the highest levels of performance and reliability for the entire range of embedded applications,” Qin says.

The Department of Computer Science at New Mexico Tech will integrate the new equipment into six upper-level computer science courses, as well as two new courses this semester.

“The equipment from Intel will enhance our research activities currently under way in the field of embedded and real-time systems,” Qin adds.

The New Mexico Tech researchers will coordinate efforts and share resources of the laboratory to support interdisciplinary collaborative research in security-aware real-time systems, energy-aware disks for embedded systems, and visual device identification for security service in wireless networks.
