N M Tech Geochem Professor Presents Mantle Plume Research

CALGARY, CANADA, Aug. 12, 2005 – New Mexico Tech geochemistry professor Kent Condie recently gave a technical presentation on a global mantle plume event he is currently studying at Earth System Processes 2, an international convention for about 350 geoscientists which was held this week in Calgary, Canada. The weeklong series of interdisciplinary meetings, presentations, and seminars was co-sponsored by the Geological Society of America and the Geological Society of Canada.

Condie’s presentation was titled “New Evidence for a Global Mantle Plume Event at 2.7 Ga and Possible Effects on Archean Paleoclimate and Biosphere.”

Condie, who has taught at New Mexico Tech since 1970, is an internationally recognized expert on mantle plumes, plate tectonics, and crustal evolution, and has written several university textbooks on these subjects.
