N M Tech President Lopez Named again as N M Power Broker

Dr. Daniel H. Lopez

by George Zamora

SOCORRO, N.M., October 1, 2004 – New Mexico Tech President Daniel H. López has been named again as one of the state’s top 140 “power brokers” by New Mexico Business Weekly in its recently published 2005 POWER Book. This marks the third year in a row the university president has been included in the annual directory of “who’s who” among the state’s business and political communities.

This year, the POWER Book expanded its typical listing of the 140 most influential people in New Mexico to include a new section that gives a rundown of the state’s top ten “Power Kids,” an honor roll which includes Socorro’s own Neil Sabol (who is also featured on the cover photo of the magazine).

“With help from the federal government, López’s administration bought the abandoned mining town of Playas for homeland-security development,” the POWER Book profile on the Tech President states. “This outside-the-box thinking is typical of López, who’s now securing funding for a $50-million, deep-space imaging observatory, and EarthScope, a $200 million, 10-year project to grid the entire continental crust.”
