SSP Day: "A Dedicated Bunch"
June 30, 2003 -- "A DEDICATED BUNCH . . ." This past Saturday, New Mexico
Tech officially welcomed to its campus one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious
research programs for academically gifted teenagers -- the renowned Summer Science
Program (SSP). New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish (left) and New Mexico
Tech. President Daniel H. López (middle) presided over the dedication of
a new astrograph at the university's Etscorn Campus Observatory as part of Saturday's
"SSP Day" events . Pictured with Denish and López at the dedication
ceremony is Stephen L. Cotler, chairman of the SSP Board of Directors and SSP
Class of 1960 alumnus. Since 1959, SSP has provided juniors and sophomores selected
from high schools across the nation and abroad with an intensive six-week summer
astronomy research program on a campus in Ojai, Calif. Beginning this summer,
SSP opened its second operating site on the New Mexico Tech campus. -NMT- | |
