Crossley named 2002 Macey Scholar at New Mexico Tech
by George Zamora
SOCORRO, N.M., March 20, 2003 -- Jared Harrington Crossley, a
senior majoring in physics with an astrophysics option at New
Mexico Tech, was named a 2002 Macey Scholar at the state-supported
research university. The honor included a $5,000 scholarship award.
Crossley, the son of Lyle and Vickie Crossley of Fort Worth,
is a graduate of Dunbar High School for Science and Engineering
Professions in Forth Worth.
Last year, Crossley also was named the recipient of the prestigious
Abraham and Esther Brook Award, which is given each
year by the New Mexico Tech physics faculty to a junior-level
undergraduate who has best demonstrated excellence in physics
studies and research.
Crossley's research experience includes a summer internship
at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and a yearlong stint
as a computer programmer with New Mexico Tech's Langmuir Laboratory
for Atmospheric Research.
In addition to his research and studies, Crossley currently
is employed at New Mexico Tech as a teaching assistant for a
laboratory section of an Introductory Physics class.
Crossley is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national honor
society for physics students, and the American Astronomical
Society.
He also is an active member of the Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship at New Mexico Tech and serves on the advisory board
of Puerto Seguro, Socorro's daytime drop-in center for homeless
and financially strapped persons in the community.
In past summers, Crossley also has worked for a Christian
missions group and has volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission,
a homeless shelter in Fort Worth.
"Through exceptional professors and undergraduate research
opportunities, New Mexico Tech has given me an excellent
education in physics and the physical sciences," Crossley
says. "I also enjoy the small-school atmosphere here at Tech,
the
approachability of Tech professors, and the tranquility of Socorro
and the surrounding countryside."
New Mexico Tech students named Macey Scholars are selected
on the basis of their demonstrated academic accomplishments, both
in the classroom and research laboratory, as well as their active
participation in institutional service and co-curricular activities.
The Macey Scholars Program is funded by an endowment established
by William B. and Jean M. Macey of Albuquerque and Tucson. William
Macey graduated from the New Mexico School of Mines (as New Mexico
Tech was known in its early years) in 1942, and also was awarded
an honorary doctorate by Tech in 1984.
