Tech Junior Garners American Ceramic Society Scholarship

SOCORRO, N.M., January 28, 2002 -- Stephanie C. Smith, a Tucson native who is now a junior majoring in materials engineering at New Mexico Tech, recently was selected by the Southwest Section of the American Ceramic Society as this year's recipient of the organization's Robert & Mary Buttle Scholarship.

Smith, the daughter of Robert and Margaret Smith of Tucson, was chosen to receive the regional scholarship on the basis of her scholastic record, personal character, and demonstrated dedication to the ceramic sciences.

The latest recipient of the annual award was selected from a pool of several applicants from a geographic area that encompasses Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Smith, a perennial honor roll student at New Mexico Tech, is a member of the university's chapters of The Materials Society, Society of Women Engineers, and ASM International.

In addition, she also is an active member of both the New Mexico Tech Gun Club and Hi-Tech Ambassadors, and regularly participates in the campus's intramural soccer league.

While attending New Mexico Tech, Smith also has worked on developing molds and castings for micromachine components.

Smith is a graduate of Flowing Wells High School in Tucson.
