U. S. News Ranks New Mexico Tech
by George Zamora
SOCORRO, N.M., September 13, 2002 -- New Mexico Tech has been
included among the 65 universities that make up the third tier
grouping in the "Best National Universities -- Doctoral"
category in the latest annual rankings published by U.S. News
& World Report.
In prior years, the state-funded research university in Socorro
was consistently listed in the magazine's unranked
category of the nation's top 14 select specialty schools that
offer most of their degrees in engineering fields.
However, a major regrouping in the annual guide was initiated
last year, based on The Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching's revised classification system, and New
Mexico Tech was subsequently moved into one of the guide's largest
category in its ranking system.
U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of
the nation's top institutions of higher education is included
in the
magazine's special issue of America's Best Colleges 2003,
which goes on sale Monday, September 16.
The magazine's current rankings of over 1,400 universities
also are available on the Internet at www.usnews.com.
