Tech Students Score Well at Pool Tournament
by George Zamora
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., February 28, 2001 -- Several New Mexico
Tech students proved they know their way around a pool table by
sweeping the consolation round at the Association of College Unions
International (ACUI) Regional Pool Tournament, which was recently
held at the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Tech students Aaron Adcock, David Byrd, Orlando Chapparo,
Steve Deal, John Dietrich, and Nicholas Tarasenko aptly represented
New Mexico Tech at the regional pool tournament after
having qualified by earning the top six places at a previously
held campus-wide tournament at the university.
Four of the Tech students--Adcock, Chapparo, Deal, and Tarasenko--advanced
from the round-robin play among the first-round field of 31 competitors
to make it to the second-round,
single-elimination segment of the tournament.
Unfortunately, all four of the Tech pool shooters who advanced
lost their first matches in the second round of play.
However, it would be in the ensuing consolation round, double-elimination
format, in which the Tech students would shine in the remaining
16-player field: Adcock placed first; Dietrich and Deal tied
for third; Tarasenko placed fifth; and Byrd ended up in sixth.
The top four players in the consolation round received plaques
for their efforts.
The trip which took the six Tech students to the regional
pool tournament in Colorado Spring was sponsored by New Mexico
Tech Auxiliary Services and the Tech Gym.
