by Marissa Wolfe
SOCORRO, N.M., March 14, 2001 -- New Mexico Tech's Master of Science
Teaching (MST) degree program recently received a grant from the
U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hayes Program to take 12
New Mexico teachers on a study trip this coming summer to Brazil.
The five-week program, which runs from June 9 until July
13, is open to all K-12 teachers in the state.
The summer program's focus of study in Brazil will be air
quality analysis, basic ecology, and Brazilian ecosystems.
Clinton P. Richardson, associate professor of environmental
engineering and chair of that department at New Mexico Tech, will
lead discussion in these topic areas in the form of two 3-credit-
hour classes. Completion of these classes may be applied as credits
toward a master's degree in science teaching from New Mexico Tech.
The group of selected teachers will travel extensively in
Brazil with stops scheduled in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brazilian
Amazonia and the Pantanel Wilderness.
Sightseeing excursions and exploration of Brazilian cultural
activities are planned in conjunction with field studies. Site
visits will be made to Brazilian schools, as well.
The Fulbright-Hayes grant supports teacher travel costs and
room and board for participants in the program. Participant selection
is competitive.
Application forms for the summer study trip in Brazil may
be accessed by calling the MST office at (505) 835-5678, or on
