Popular Mineral Museum Featured in New Mexico Magazine
by George Zamora
SOCORRO, N.M., September 13, 2001 -- The well-known and oft-visited
Mineral
Museum on
the campus of New Mexico Tech is the subject of a featured article
in the current October issue of New Mexico magazine.
A regular column in the magazine, Asi es Nuevo México,
focuses on the museum and its treasure trove of more than 15,000
high-quality mineral specimens.
Located in the university's Workman Center north annex, the
Mineral Museum is a popular destination year round for serious
mineral collectors, amateur rockhounds, and even visitors who
can't tell the difference between samples of real gold and "fool's
gold."
The Mineral Museum, which traces its origins to the establishment
of New Mexico Tech in 1889, is maintained by the New Mexico Bureau
of Geology and Mineral Resources and is open to
the public, free of charge, Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
More information about the museum can be obtained by calling
(505) 835-5420.
