by George Zamora
SOCORRO, N.M., September 6, 2001 -- New Mexico Tech has been
included among the 57 universities that make up the third tier
grouping in the "Best National Universities--Doctoral"
category in the latest annual rankings published today by U.S. News & World Report.
The state-funded research university in Socorro was one of
several schools included in the magazine's rankings which were
reclassified last year by The Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching, a grouping system which U.S. News
& World Report uses as the basis for its ranking categories.
In prior years, New Mexico Tech was listed in the magazine's
unranked category of 14 select specialty schools that offer most
of their degrees in engineering fields.
Under Carnegie's revised classification system, New Mexico
Tech is now considered a "Doctoral/Research University--
Intensive."
U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of
the nation's top institutions of higher education is included
in the magazine's special issue of America's Best Colleges
2002, which is slated to go on sale Monday, September 10.
The magazine's current rankings of over 1,400 universities
also are available on the Internet at www.usnews.com.
