Quality of NMT Undergrads Ranks Highly

SOCORRO, N.M., August 29, 2000 -- A recent report released by TheCenter at theUniversity of Florida, titled The Top American Research Universities, lists New Mexico Tech as tied for 38th among the top 100 public institutions in terms of median SAT scores posted by their entering undergraduate students.

Students entering New Mexico Tech were shown to have a median SAT score of 1180, placing the state-funded research university in a tie with the University of California at San Diego, slightly ahead of James Madison University and the University of Iowa and slightly behind Michigan Technological University and the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire.

Statistics on SAT scores used in TheCenter's nationwide survey and report were compiled from The College Board's College Handbook 2000, which reflects SAT scores posted by the 1998
freshman class.

"The median SAT, while not a complete measure of student quality, is relatively standard because most institutions use it as part of the admissions process, and it is also less influenced by differences in undergraduate population size or financial aid practices," TheCenter's report states.

Median SAT scores are one of ten quality measures used by TheCenter in its structured report which identifies key characteristics of the top research universities in America, and "helps institutions understand the characteristics of the marketplace and the opportunities for improvement."

The Top American Research Universities is an occasional paper published by TheCenter in conjunction with the Lombardi Program on Measuring University Performance.
