by George Zamora
SOCORRO, N.M., November 5, 1999 -- Timothy Wangler, a native
of Clovis who is now a
junior majoring in chemical engineering at New Mexico Tech, recently
was named the recipient of the research university's "Sophomore
Excellence Award," an annual award presented by the local
chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
Wangler, a graduate of Clovis High School, is the son of
John and Nora Wangler of Clovis.
He was selected for the prestigious honor from a field of
several top chemical engineering students by an interdisciplinary
committee of engineering professors at New Mexico Tech.
Wangler maintained the highest scholastic standing of his
class through his sophomore year and posted the highest grade
point average (GPA) of any of the Tech students being considered
for the AIChE award.
Wangler currently is employed as a student research assistant
at New Mexico Tech, working with Tech chemical engineering professor
Donald Weinkauf on a project involving polymer functionalization
in a plasma environment.
During summer breaks, Wangler has worked as a student intern
at Intel Corporation's plant in Rio Rancho.
He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, a national honor society for
engineering students, and serves as vice president of the university's
chapter of AIChE.
"I really like the individual attention students receive
from the faculty here at New Mexico Tech," Wangler says.
"The quality of education you get for the price you pay
at this university is unbeatable."
