John A. Kruppenbach, Class of 51Alumni Association Distinguished Service AwardJack Kruppenbach, of the Class of 1951, has been a major supporter of this university for many years, in recognition of the fact that his own education here was a major factor in his later career success. Together with his wife Elizabeth, Jack established a scholarship fund called the Kruppenbach- Harrison Scholarship, after their parents, Harry and Mabel Kruppenbach and Reginald and Catherine Harrison. Over the years, this fund has helped support many students in fields related to earth sciences, including mining and petroleum engineering -- as well as environmental science and engineering.Additionally, Jack has provided opportunities for economic geologists to attend professional conferences. In recent years, Jack has become a major supporter of Tech's solar racing team. He has been a firm believer that the learning experience of designing a solar car is its primary purpose. Jack Kruppenbach, for your continuing support of New Mexico Tech, it is my pleasure to present you with this Distinguished Service Award. John A. Kruppenbach entered Tech after discharge from the U. S. Army. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology. During his forty-five year career, he worked for Continental Geophysical Company, Geophysical Service Incorporated (GSI), the Explosives Technical and Sales Departments of Trojan Powder Company, again at GSI as a party chief, area supervisor and area manager, and was Digicon Geophysical Company's West Coast USA and Alaska area manager. In 1974, Kruppenbach and three partners founded Energy Analysts Incorporated, a company that did consulting work on a worldwide basis, in which he was responsible for seismic data acquisition in shallow water in remote areas. He remained with Energy Analysts when it was purchased by Landmark Graphics Incorporated in 1987, leaving in 1990 to co-found Pool Forge Group Incorporated, a company that "seeds" new enterprise. Kruppenbach's career has spanned forty-five years of seismic industry technical and business experience. His work has resulted in patents pertaining to seismic explosives formulations and seismology (including the original "Land Streamer" technology for arctic and desert work), and papers and publications pertaining to remote area data acquisition, logistics, and boat design. He also co-founded a successful seismic company and a bank, and has been, or is, a board of directors member of profit and non-profit organizations. Jack Kruppenbach's memberships, in addition to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, include: The American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and the American Association of Manufacturing Engineers, also the Board of Directors of the Center for Science, Technology and Political Thought. Retirement has not diminished Jack's interest in, and enthusiasm for, geophysics. Rather, it has given him time to pursue additional areas of interest, such as civic affairs, resulting in co-founding Rock Creek Research, in which he is a co-director. | |
