The Dr. Clay T. and Sallie Smith Student Fund, established by New Mexico Tech’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, will be used to enhance student field experiences for Earth Science students. It recognizes Dr. Smith’s long career in field geology. His final field adventure was a brisk expedition into the nearby Quebradas, three days before his sudden demise in 2003, at the venerable age of 87.

See E&ES's Clay T. Smith Memorial page.

Sallie Smith passed away on Dec. 8, 2007, in Alhambra, Calif. See Sallie Smith

Dr. and Mrs. Smith came to Socorro in 1947, when Dr. Smith joined the faculty at New Mexico Tech. He became acquainted with virtually every student on campus over his 35 years in the Geoscience department. Over his long career, Dr. Smith became an eminent authority on the geology of New Mexico, and was in high demand as a consultant for industry and government. In 1995, he received the Marsden Award from the Society of Economic Geologists for outstanding service to the society and the profession.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Smith were active members of the Socorro community. Dr. Smith was a founding member of the Socorro Lions Club, served as treasurer for the Friends of the Bosque del Apache, and served as a referee for high school sports and director of the New Mexico Science Fair. Mrs. Smith belongs to the American Association of University Women, and P.E.O, an international philanthropic organization for the advancement of women through education.
