All New Mexico Tech engineering functions are processed through the office of the Associate Director Engineering, the department that oversees new construction and remodeling projects. As the chief engineer for [9]New Mexico Tech, the Associate Director Engineering works with general contractors to supervise all phases of on-campus construction from start to finish as part of a turn-key operation.

Duties include construction oversight from reviewing initial concept drawings to approving a final set of working plans. The Associate Director Engineering meets regularly with the [10]Construction Manager throughout the building phase of any new project, including regular on-site inspections and reviewing employee job loads.


Specific duties include:

  • Participates in the plan, design, evaluation, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of all university mechanical systems to ensure that the needs of the institute are met in the most timely and economically efficient manner. Mechanical systems include heating plants, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing and associated distribution systems.
  • Reviews and coordinates mechanical plans with architectural plans in meeting specifications and equipment needs for new installations and renovations. Inspects projects during and following installation, and advises as to compliance with specifications prior to the institute's formal acceptance.
  • Assists the Facilities Management Director in establishing institute standards as guidelines for future project planning, design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Prepares reports and analyses as to progress and adverse trends, and any recommendations and/or conclusions.
    Monitors labor and materials for all campus construction projects and remodels. Supervises two Purchasing Buyers who handle all Facilities Management purchasing requests in-house for quick turn-around purchase and delivery.
  • Writes and audits safety policies in tandem with the Associate Director for Safety and Security, and delivers a "Safety Orientation" to all new Facilities Management employees. The Associate Director Engineering is the source for the most recent edition of the "OSHA Handbook" and keeps safety training videos on file.
  • Advises and assists with issues related to mechanical and electrical maintenance such, but not restricted to, psychometrics, fluid flow, and mechanical control systems.
  • Develops new employee training programs.
